It’s been nearly three years since Suns starter Robert Morey was drafted by then the Florida Marlins in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB draft out of the University of Virginia. Like many players, the right-hander can remember exactly when he was doing when he found out the news.
“I remember going to the field because we had practice and [former Virginia teammate, now Mississippi Brave] Phil Gosselin actually got picked two picks before me,” he says. “We all celebrated then and then I got picked right after that so they all came out and gave me hugs.”
It was Morey’s catcher who first delivered the good news to him, and told him which team had drafted him, though the 24-year-old may not have known who they were at the time.
“He said, ‘Bro, you’re going to the Fish’”, Morey said, laughing. “I was like, ‘who are the Fish’, I had no idea who they were.”
And so it was on a baseball field where the pitcher heard the news. A place he had worked for so many years and finally it was all culminating in being selected to play professionally.
“I got a little bit emotional because it had been a long time coming and also I knew my three years at school were kind of coming to a close,” he said. “It was tough, but one door closes, another opens.”
That day, Morey and his teammate Phil Gosselin were separated by just two picks, with Gosselin selected by the Braves. Last week, it was sixty feet, six inches that separated the two with Morey pitching against Gosselin.
“That was pretty cool, we’ve been playing against each other,” he said. “I played against him in Low-A as well.”
The two were able to meet up afterwards over dinner to catch up and talk about the seasons they’re having and how their former teammates are doing.
“It’s cool when you play against them and you hope you see them again in the Big Leagues,” he added.
Morey’s teammates are all over professional baseball, with several either just reaching the Majors or on the cuspe of being called up.
“Jarrett Parker, he just had a big night for the Richmond [Flying] Squirrels, a few other guys like David Adams, he just got called up by the Yankees,” he said. “There’s a ton of them and it’s fun watching them develop too.”
“Hopefully I can see them up in the Big Leagues too and go out to a nicer dinner too,” he laughs.
