The Jacksonville Suns ended their six-game series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on a high note on Saturday evening, defeating the Blue Wahoos 7-1. The two teams finished the set even at three games apiece.
The Suns powered past Pensacola thanks to in part to back-to-back homers from 1B Logan Morrison, who is with Jacksonville on a Major League Rehab Assignment, and RF Kyle Jensen in the eighth inning.
Below are the calls of both home runs from the “Voice of the Suns” Roger Hoover.
For Morrison, it was his first home run of his Major League Rehab Assignment, while it was Jensen’s eighth roundtripper of the year.
Outfielder Christian Yelich (2-5, 1 RBI), along with infielder Zack Cox (2-5, 1 R) each recorded multi-hit efforts for the Suns in the victory, while Blue Wahoos outfielder Bryson Smith (2-4) collected two base knocks.
Suns starter Adam Conley (5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO) did not factor in the decision after yielding a lone earned run on five hits, adding six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work, while Pensacola starter Tim Crabbe (6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO) suffered the loss.
Jacksonville now returns to Bragan Field for a five-game series with the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The first pitch of the series is set for 6:05 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds, with RHP Jay Jackson (2-2, 2.70 ERA) slated to take the hill for the Suns, while the BayBears are anticipated to give the nod to LHP Andrew Chafin (1-4, 3.00 ERA).
The Miami Marlins, the Suns’ parent club, were also victorious on Saturday as they defeated the New York Mets 8-1 behind a strong start from rookie RHP Jose Fernandez (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 SO). Fernandez earned the victory to improve to 3-3 on the year after allowing just three hits over the course of his seven shutout frames.
Former Suns outfielder Marcell Ozuna saw his Major League leading 16-game hit streak come to an end with an 0-for-3 night, though he did draw a walk and score a run.
Having already clinched the three-game series, the Marlins look to sweep the Mets Sunday afternoon, with the series finale set for 1:10 p.m. at Marlins Park. New York is scheduled to send RHP Matt Harvey (5-0, 1.85 ERA) to the mound, while RHP Kevin Slowey (1-5, 3.59 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Fish.
