Top Miami Marlins pitching prospect Jose Fernandez will begin the season in the major leagues, announced by the Marlins on Sunday morning.
Fernandez, who was reportedly projected to start the season with Double-A Jacksonville, will make his major league debut with the Marlins next Sunday against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Fernandez joins the rotation due to injuries to starters Nathan Eovaldi and Henderson Alvarez, who will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list.
Marlins President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest explained the move to reporters earlier this morning in Washington.
Fernandez went a combined 14-1 last season between Single-A Greensboro and High-A Jupiter, and only logged two innings in big league spring training for the Marlins this spring.
The new rotation for Miami is as follows:
The Marlins minor leaguers broke camp on Saturday, and the Jacksonville roster will be announced later this week. The Suns’ home opener at Bragan Field at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville is Thursday April 4 at 7:05 p.m.
