Saturday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, the 2014 Southern League champion Jacksonville Suns, will play host to their parent club Miami Marlins for the first time since 2010. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. with gates opening at 11:30 a.m. For those arriving early, make sure to be in your seats when the Marlins take batting practice at 12:15 p.m.
The last time the Marlins traveled to Bragan Field the ballpark was filled to capacity bringing in 10,843 fans. Those on hand saw the Suns defeat the Marlins 4-3 thanks in part to a Mike Stanton, as he was known at the time, 420-foot blast in the first inning. Stanton was called up to the big club on June 6th of that season after shining in 51 games clubbing 21 homers.
Stanton returning from multiple facial fractures after being hit by a pitch in 2014,has left little doubt after signing a 325 million dollar mega-deal this offseason spanning over 13 years. This spring he’s mashed five home runs to go along with 15 RBI and has posted an impressive .313 batting average.
Along with Stanton, there will be other former Suns returning to Jacksonville, including newly re-signed Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna who will help round out Miami’s projected opening day outfield. Former Suns pitchers that will also make a return back to northern Florida are Steve Cishek, A.J. Ramos, and Brad Hand.
The Marlins are expected to start Dan Haren in his final tune up before the 2015 season. Marlins manager Mike Redmond has said he expects to keep Haren’s pitch count anywhere between 85 to 90 pitches in the contest. Haren this spring has earned a 1-2 record, sporting a 4.66 ERA in 19.1 innings pitched.
The Marlins will open their season against the Atlanta Braves on Monday April 6th at 4:10 p.m. ET at Marlins Park.
As for the Suns, Southern League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Viosergy Rosa will headline those returning to the Double-A affiliate, alongside former New York Yankee David Adams, and Sun’s saves leader from a year ago Nick Wittgren.
The Suns will look to defend their S.L. championship when they open up their 2015 campaign against the Jackson Generals on Thursday April 9th with a first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. That contest will mark the beginning of a 20-game homestand at Bragan Field in April.
