The Jacksonville Suns (3-1) will host the Montgomery Biscuits (1-4) for the opening game of their five-game set tonight from Bragan Field with a first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
The Suns are coming off of a series victory over the Jackson Generals in which they took three out of the four games played. The fifth and final game of the series was cancelled, and will not be made up due to a rain storm that swept through the area leaving the two in a scoreless tie. Although stats from the contest will count, there will be no impact on the records for either team.
Montgomery comes in to tonight’s action having lost four of their first five games of 2015 to the Chattanooga Lookouts. After taking the opening game, the Biscuits would then drop the next four while being outscored 27-10 in the process.
Those that stand out from visiting Montgomery, include top prospects like catcher Justin O’Connor and shortstop Daniel Robertson, who were rated 1-2 on the list of top farm talent in the Tampa Bay Rays system by MLB.com. O’Connor has 1HR and 2 RBI while hitting at a .250 clip through five. Robertson coming into tonight has posted a .150 average which is good for 3-for-20 at the plate.
O’Connor is a 2011 first round draft pick with the Rays while Robertson was originally a first round pick in 2012 with the Oakland Athletics, and came over in a deal that sent major-leaguer Ben Zorbrist out west.
For tonight’s pitching matchup the Suns will head back to the top of their rotation when Trevor Williams (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the ball against Biscuits right-hander Jaime Schultz (0-0, 3.86 ERA).
Williams is coming off a no decision against Jackson on opening night fanning nine batters over six strong innings of work in a 2-0 Suns loss. Schultz against Chattanooga in the opener, lasted 4 and 2/3 innings striking out nine batters in a no decision, in a matchup in which the Biscuits ultimately won by a 4-3 score.
Fans can listen to the game live on the Suns Baseball Network, with Roger Hoover providing play by play. Roger Hoover and Kyle Crooks will host the Memorial Hospital Suns Pre-Game Show, beginning at 6: 50 p.m. ET on the Suns Baseball Network.
Matchup: Montgomery Biscuits (1-4) @ Jacksonville Suns (3-1)
Starters: MTG: RHP Jaime Schultz (0-0,3.86) vs. JAX: RHP Trevor Williams (0-0, 0.00)
Who’s Hot: Suns OF Kenny Wilson has gotten off to a fine start in 2015 hitting .313 with two doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI. He’s reached base safely in four of the five games against Jackson, to go along with multiple highlight reel grabs patrolling center field.
Suns Spots: Here’s a note from the official Jacksonville Suns game notes:
-Starting pitching has been one of the brightest aspects of Jacksonville’s 3-1 start. Five solid starting pitching performances from Trevor Williams, Jake Esch, Chipper Smith, Kendry Flores, and Austin Brice impressed those on hand. The five combined allowed one earned run on ten total hits over 21 and a 1/3 innings pitched. As a pitching staff, bullpen included, the Suns have posted an ERA of 0.84, which is good for first in the Southern League.
