Suns Topped by Shuckers 7-3

Game Recap

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Suns (1-1, 30-41) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (1-1, 44-26) 7-3 Friday night from Bragan Field.

Hear from Suns manager David Berg postgame:

Tyler Wagner (W, 6-2) generated seven innings in his start for Biloxi allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Suns starter Scott Lyman (L, 0-2) worked three innings allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits while walking five and striking out two.

The scoring would begin in the top of the first after Josh Fellhauer generated a one out walk, to then get knocked in by Orlando Arcia’s RBI triple pushing Biloxi ahead 1-0. With Arcia on third, a wild pitch from Suns starter Lyman brought him home and doubled up the lead to 2-0.

Moving to the last of the second three straight singles with one out courtesy of Ryan Rieger, Terrence Dayleg, and Zack Cox loaded the bases for Sharif Othman. Othman then grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice plating a run, and a throwing error by Shuckers shortstop Arcia brought home another baserunner on the same play to tie the score at two through two innings of play.

In the top of the fourth the Shuckers worked the bases loaded against Suns starter Lyman who offered up a walk to Nathan Orf to force in a run from third and give Biloxi a 3-2 lead. Now with Jacksonville bullpen arm Chipper Smith on the mound, he would relinquish a walk to force in the inning’s second run and provide Biloxi with a 4-2 edge. Arcia’s run-scoring double completed the scoring in the frame and set the scoring at 5-2.

Flashing to the sixth frame Biloxi worked a pair of runners on with one out for Michael Reed’s run-scoring single making it a 6-2 ballgame. Next batter Nick Ramirez then lifted a RBI sacrifice fly to center to bring in a runner from third pushing the Suns deficit to 7-2.

The Suns tacked on a solo run in the bottom of the seventh, via a David Adams pinch-hit RBI double that brought in Zack Cox after he worked a one out walk. The Suns were now trailing 7-3.

Chipper Smith in relief for Jacksonville hurled three frames surrendering two runs (none earned) while walking one striking out four. Fabian Williamson hurled a perfect seventh inning out of the bullpen for the Suns. Blake Logan tossed a scoreless two innings in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Suns and Shuckers will continue their series on Saturday night with a first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET from Bragan Field. The Suns will send out major league rehabber Jose Fernandez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) while the Shuckers will counter with righty Jorge Lopez (5-2, 3.02 ERA).
