JACKSONVILE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Suns (5-5, 34-45) worked past the Chattanooga Lookouts (1-8, 44-33) 3-2 Sunday after a one hour and 40 minute rain delay to start the night from Bragan Field.
Raudel Lazo (W, 1-0) earned the win in relief tonight for the Suns hurling a scoreless inning and two thirds. D.J. Johnson (L, 0-1) out of the bullpen for the Lookouts took the loss after posting an inning of work relinquishing one run (earned) while walking and striking out a solo batter. Juancito Martinez (S, 5) came in with one out in the ninth and allowed one hit after notching down his fifth save of the year for Jacksonville.
The scoring would begin in the bottom of the first after Carlos Lopez (HR, 3) sent a deep solo blast over the right field wall to make it 1-0 Jacksonville. In the same frame, the Suns would load the bases to bring in a run courtesy of an error on a Terrence Dayleg ground ball by Lookouts shortstop Niko Goodrum. The Suns would lead 2-0 through one inning of play.
With two outs against Suns reliever Blake Logan, the Lookouts would get a walk from Max Kepler followed up by Adam Brett Walker’s RBI double to trim the Suns lead to 2-1 in the sixth.
In the seventh, Niko Goodrum (HR, 2) blasted a solo home run over the right field wall to make it a tie game at two.
In the bottom of the same frame, David Adams drove in Carlos Lopez to give the Suns a 3-2 lead, after Lopez led off the frame with a walk, to then move into scoring position courtesy of J.T. Riddle’s sac bunt.
Suns starter Austin Brice would work four scoreless innings allowing one hit while walking one and striking out eight. Suns reliever Blake Logan out of Jacksonville’s bullpen tossed two and two-thirds frames surrendering two runs (both earned) while walking two and striking out one.
The Suns and Lookouts will square off again Monday night from Bragan Field with a first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET. The Suns will send out right-hander Jake Esch (6-4, 3.57 ERA) while the Lookouts will counter with lefty Jason Wheeler (0-1, 6.35 ERA).
