JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– The Jacksonville Suns (22-33, 51-73) split a twin bill with the Mobile BayBears (29-24, 63-58) after taking the opener 5-0 they would fall in the finale 1-0 Saturday night from Bragan Field.
In game one, Chipper Smith (W, 3-3) got the start for Jacksonville and worked five and a third innings surrendering three hits while walking three and striking out four in the victory. BayBears starter Edgar Garcia (L, 4-1) tossed four innings allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits while walking and striking out four in the losing decision.
The scoring would begin in the bottom of the first, after Kenny Wilson started out the frame with a triple to then get driven home courtesy of Matt Juengel’s RBI infield single. With the Suns now leading 1-0, and runners on the corners, Terrence Dayleg (HR, 3) blasted a three run home run over the left field wall to push Jacksonville ahead 4-0.
In the last of the sixth the Suns worked runners on the corners for Sharif Othman’s RBI sacrifice fly into center that made the tally 5-0 in the Suns favor.
In game two, Silvino Bracho (W, 3-1) generated a perfect seventh frame in relief en route to a winning decision. Tyler Higgins (L, 0-1) took the loss out of the Suns bullpen allowing one run (earned) after Sean Jamieson’s home run in the ninth.
Flashing to the top of the seventh and Mobile’s Jamieson (HR, 4) ripped a solo home run down the left field line that moved Jacksonville ahead 1-0.
Suns starter Jose Jose in his double-A debut worked three scoreless innings allowing two hits while not walking a batter and striking out seven. BayBears starter Gabriel Arias generated five and a third scoreless frames surrendering two hits while walking two and striking out eight.
Out of the Suns bullpen C.J. Robinson tossed a scoreless three frames relinquishing one hit while walking and striking out one
The Suns will open up a 10-game road trip with the Birmingham Barons Sunday night with a first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. ET from Regions field. The Suns will send out right-hander Scott Lyman (1-8, 6.53 ERA) while the Barons will counter with righty Tyler Danish (7-10, 4.69 ERA).
