Suns and Barons Battle in Rubber Match

The Jacksonville Suns (24-35, 53-75) will try and grab the rubber match against the Birmingham Barons (32-26, 65-62) tonight with a first pitch set in the series finale for 8:05 p.m. ET from Regions Field.

Tonight will mark a rubber match between the Suns and the Barons. Jacksonville is looking for their fourth series win in the second half, and their ninth overall on the season. JAX has not faired well in series finales posted a 6-20 overall mark, and a 3-9 record in the latter portion of 2015. This would mark their third-straight series win.

Viosergy Rosa has been providing power for the Suns in the month of August, blasting six home runs and 18 RBI along with a .301 average in 23 games. In his last 10 contests, the first-baseman has three long balls alongside nine RBI. This month Rosa controls the team-lead in home runs, he’s tied with David Adams in RBI, and possesses the second-best batting average.

Tonight’s pitching matchup will feature Jacksonville right-hander Austin Brice to be opposed by Birmingham righty Myles Jaye. Brice enters tonight’s start 5-8 alongside a 4.88 ERA in 23 starts with the Suns. Brice last trip to the hill came on 8/21 against Mobile, in which he allowed one run (unearned) on four hits while walking one and striking out eight in a 98-pitch performance attached with a no decision. After the all-star break the 23-year old has put together a 3-2 mark to go along with an ERA of 3.27 in 10 starts and 55 innings on the mound. The native of North Carolina has made a pair of starts against Birmingham, and put together a 1-1 record while sporting a 4.50 ERA in 12 frames pitched. Brice is a former ninth-round selection of the Marlins in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Northwood High School (Pittsboro, N.C.), and he entered the 2015 season pre-noted as the organization’s 29th best prospect according to Baseball America.

Jaye will enter play tonight 11-7 attached with an ERA of 3.01 in 23 starts with the Barons. His last start came on 8/22 against Mississippi, in which he generated six innings surrendering two runs (both earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out five in a 83-pitch effort. The native of Georgia has faced the Suns in three starts and manufactured a record of 2-1 with an ERA of 3.06 over 17 and two-thirds innings. The 23-year old was originally drafted in the 17th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Starrs Mill High School (Fayetteville, Ga.) by the Toronto Blue Jays. He entered the White Sox organization along with righty Daniel Webb courtesy of a trade that sent major-league pitcher Jason Frasor to the Blue Jays in 2012.

Who’s Hot: Centerfielder Kenny Wilson has hit safely in eighth of his last nine games. Terrence Dayleg finished a perfect 3-for-3 accompanied with a home run on Sunday night, and in his last nine games has put together an eye-opening .320 average. Infielder David Adams has tallied a hit in eleven of his last thirteen starts, including a walk-off base hit on Friday night against Mobile. Eudy Pina in his last six games has generated a .450 batting mark attached with three RBI and four runs scored. Reliever Tyler Bremer since getting the call up to AA JAX on 8/23 has tossed a total of six scoreless frames in relief. Viosergy Rosa now has three home runs and nine RBI in his last 10 games.

Matt Juengel currently rests tied for second in home runs (16) and fifth in RBI (64). Outfielder Kenny Wilson is second in stolen bases (34). Viosergy Rosa (72) sits third in walks generated while Elliot Soto (64) is fifth. Starter Austin Brice has the third-best K/9 ratio for starters (9.45) and is fourth in K’s (120). David Adams possesses the fifth-best on-base percentage (.392).
