Suns Topped by Braves 10-6

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – The Jacksonville Suns (26-41, 55-81) were dropped by the Mississippi Braves (36-30, 69-65) 10-6 Friday night from Bragan Field

Brighton Trepagnier (W, 4-2) earned the victory after tossing a scoreless eighth for the Braves. Josh Hodges (L, 1-2) (BS, 1) in relief for Jacksonville only retired one batter allowing six runs (all earned) on four hits while walking two and not striking out a batter.

The scoring would begin in the top of the second after KD Kang led off with a triple, to then get knocked in by Rio Ruiz’s run scoring groundout that moved the Braves in front 1-0.

Moving to the third frame, a one out double by Emerson Landoni set him up in scoring position for a Kevin Ahrens RBI single, that made it a 2-0 edge for the Braves.

Flashing to the bottom half of the third inning it was Chris Hoo ripping a one out triple to stand 90-feet away from home for Scott Lyman’s RBI single to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

In the top of the fourth the Braves worked a pair of runners on the corners with one out. Matt Lipka then bounced into a RBI fielder’s choice scoring a run, and pushing the Braves edge to 3-1.

Flashing to the bottom of the sixth the Suns worked the first two batters on base via the walk. David Adams looped a run scoring single into right to bring the Suns to within a 3-2 tally. Next batter Matt Juengel, then arched a RBI sacrifice fly into center to tie the score at three.

To the seventh, against Suns reliever Jose Jose, Steve Rodriguez mashed a double to center to set up shop in scoring position. After a sac bunt moved Rodriguez to third, a fielding error by Suns right fielder Carlos Lopez brought home a run and moved the Braves ahead 4-3.

In the last of the seventh Jacksonville manufactured runners on the corners with one out. It was David Adams who laced a two RBI single that moved the Suns in the lead at 5-4.

In the top of the ninth the Braves worked runners on the corners with nobody out against Suns reliever Josh Hodges. It was Matt Lipka who laid down a RBI squeeze bunt that tied the game at five. Two batters later, Landoni looped a two-run single to move Mississippi ahead 7-5. Next batter Kevin Ahrens provided a sac fly to move the Braves in front 8-5. A RBI single by Eric Garcia and a throwing error on Terrence Dayleg put the Braves on top 10-5.

A RBI single by Elliot Soto in the bottom of the ninth moved the Suns to within a 10-6 tally.

Suns starter Scott Lyman lasted six innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out two in a no decision.

The Suns and Braves will square off again Saturday night from Bragan Field with a first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET. Suns will send out left-hander Jarlin Garcia (0-3, 5.58 ERA) while the Braves will counter with righty Andrew Thurman (1-3, 4.58 ERA).
