Dietrich Joins Suns on Major League Rehab Assignment

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Miami Marlins announced a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight’s game against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at the Blue Wahoos Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Miami Marlins infielder Derek Dietrich has been placed on a major league rehab assignment with the Suns, and will join the ball club tonight in Pensacola. Dietrich was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 23 (retroactive to August 19) with a right knee contusion. Dietrich has played in the majors all season for the Marlins, hitting .276 with four home runs and 32 runs batted in in 106 games played for the Marlins, mostly playing at second base or first base.

Dietrich has played for the Marlins in parts of four seasons since 2013, and is a career .248 hitter with 28 home runs and 96 RBI. Dietrich spent most of his 2013 season with the Jacksonville Suns, hitting .271 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI, his first season in the Miami organization after being acquired in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for shortstop Yunel Escobar on Dec. 4, 2012.

Dietrich, 27, is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and played in college at Georgia Tech.

The Suns roster now stands at 25 active players, and a revised roster is attached.

The Suns open a series in Pensacola at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, when Suns left-hander Dillon Peters (3-0) is scheduled to face Wahoos right-hander Tyler Mahle (6-3). The Suns begin their final home series Thursday against Mobile with Mavericks Live Thirsty Thursday fueled by Budweiser, when fans 21 and over can purchase $1 12-oz. and $2 24-oz. beers adjacent to the new Budweiser Tiki Terrace, under the left-field video board, at the right-field bleachers, and behind section 115.
